Jay Turser Beatle bass This bass was my first-ever eBay purchase. It's a cheap Chinese-made copy of the Hofner Violin bass associated with the bulk of Paul McCartney's Beatles period (that groovy Rickenbacker on Magical Mystery Tour notwithstanding*). Short scale (30") with the hottest pickups of any bass i've ever owned. It came to me with flatwounds on it, i suppose to approximate Paul's bass ("something" from Abbey Road is one of the best examples of that sound), and i stuck with flats for a while, but eventually put rounds on it, at which point it lit up like a Christmas tree—more Entwistle than McCartney. With the low action, short scale, and light strings it's very easy to get around on, and sounds much bigger than it looks: a big fat farty bass sound. Monkeying with its (very non-intuitive) control panel yields a fairly narrow tonal range, so best to play wide open and EQ at the amp. It's incredibly neck-heavy, proportionately. In fact, it's more neck than not, but this is easily solved by attaching the strap to the headstock (like any good 60s folkie) rather than the neck block strap button. No modifications made by me, save for removal of the pickguard. I used it for the tune "note to self" on we raise up our glasses. * [Oops: ended that sentence with a preposition there. Dangit, i just did it again! Geez; i keep doing it over and over. I might need some help here.] |
