king and crown
oh my craving—blessed addiction
rules his kingdom with a plastic spoon
i keep a postcard from his corronation
depicting the total eclipse of sun and moon
gray grew the sky and the rabble all cried
give us a king like the nations
the prophet cried warning and lifted his hands
heed what shall befall you
‘neath such a command
but we all swoon to see such a princely authority
with his paper straw sceptre
and stainless steel throne
now his profile’s been coined
and we bow as he passes
we pledge our allegiance
we raise up our glasses
god save his majesty—wretched edition
king poet warrior of bar stool fame
lion-hearted leader cold-blooded ceasar
demanding ongoing tribute paid his name
when i recall my treasonous plot
i blush even now in my shame at the thought
my ill-fated coup ‘neath a vanishing moon
was put down at once in the darkness last june
forced to recant declarations i wrote
at his throne on my knees
with a blade to my throat
now i pay the royal tax
letters stamped in sealing wax
penned in shaky hand
i bless the crown and fear the axe
when i rally my courage to do without
the light of the sun disappears
and i shout for illumination
from the night’s blessed moon
light the way for me to plant some seeds
or write some new tunes
but shrouded in darkness i’m forced to entreat
my ransom from the palace treasury
and god save the king is once again on my lips
and casting no shadow i stumble
in the moon’s full eclipse
oh my craving—blessed addiction
regards his subject with a wary eye
the brim-full chalice ash tray cathedral
before his standard waves proudly from on high
