the dj
the dj’s on weekdays he spins folk and jazz t’ward the west end of the fm dial
and he favors the flavors and chooses to play
the music i’d be listening to anyway
and some of those songs i’ve heard before
and a few i’m afraid that i’ve lived
some of those songs i wish that i’d written
and one or two i did
the dj reads headlines a promo and a psa
in a clear voice that’s calm
and commanding
he speaks where we are
in our cars and our homes
and not far away he is in my headphones
releasing the music into the atmosphere
when i’ve fallen asleep in my chair
sometimes on target sometimes on trial
and always on the air
and he says
the weather for all of our listening area
will mainly be happening outdoors
i’ll do my best to play all your requests
but my hour draweth near
when i’m out of here
‘cause i’m only on ‘til four
the dj’s on holidays
he told me one time that the songs are his true relations
they don’t show up once a year bellowing christmas cheer
or pounding his door down with their expectations
and the songs never nag him to be
someone else
or guilt him for forgetting to call
the songs don’t let their children pound on his piano
the songs just carry the music is all
music is all
and he’s playing some miles some neil
and some van some joni and django tonight
and i might call him up
and make no request
but just tell him the music is all alright
and say thanks
